York

Perfectly placed between London and Edinburgh, steeped in history and full of fun things to do, a visit to York is a no-brainer.

York Minster

From York train station, the towering York Minster is only a 10-minute walk. Step inside to see the stunning stained glass of the Great East Window, then head to the Central Tower to admire the highest point in York!

York Walls

If the weather is on your side, take your time to stroll the ancient medieval walls and try some of the delicious food and coffee from the local independents you’ll pass on your free walk around the city.

Good to know: York Walls are currently one way only. You can walk the walls in a clockwise direction. Details of the entry and exit points can be found here and are marked on the walls.

Leeds is a popular location for those seeking a city break, culture and shopping.

Roundhay Park

Explore one of the biggest city parks in Europe. From fountains and Victorian architecture to a lakeside cafe and tennis courts, this park has everything you need for a great free family day out, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Shopping in Leeds

Leeds has no shortage of places for some retail therapy. Indulge in designer brands in Victoria Gate and Victoria Quarter. Then head down to Leeds Corn Exchange where you’ll find a range of independent shops, full of interesting and inspiring products. All of this, plus the Trinity Centre just a short walk from Leeds Train Station.

Good to know: Some shops may be operating reduced opening hours and have their own rules on face coverings; you should check ahead of your visit.

Durham

The beautiful city of Durham is almost a hidden gem. Tucked between York and Newcastle, there’s so much to see and do in this historic city.

Durham Cathedral

Built on a hill and looped by the River Wear, Durham Cathedral is like something straight out of a Harry Potter film. In fact, part of the Cathedral was used in the Harry Potter series as part of Hogwarts.

Good to know: Entry is free, but capacity is limited so you may have to queue. There is a one-way system in place to ensure visitors can safely distance and some areas remain closed.

Riverside Walk

Fancy seeing what lies beyond Durham city centre? Take a steady riverside walk. The 4.5 mile route is on surfaced paths and roads, so you can do it in comfortable shoes in any weather.

Newcastle

Visit the land of the Geordies. This city is more than just “why aye man” and Newcastle Brown Ale. With a rich sporting history and a thriving cultural scene, you’re in for a treat.

BALTIC

Housed in an old flour mill, BALTIC is a Centre for Contemporary Art. Showcasing blockbuster art pieces and innovative new work, plus a viewing platform for great views of Newcastle. This free centre is a must-visit, especially when you need to shelter from the Summer rain!

Good to know: The BALTIC re-opens August 10th and visitors should book a free ticket with an allocated timeslot in advance to guarantee a space. Ticket are available to book now.

Victoria Tunnels

Hidden underground is a secret network of tunnels used to transport coal in the 19th Century. During World War II they were converted into an air raid shelter. Now, you can tour these tunnels and experience what life was like for the miners and residents of Newcastle during these two periods.

Good to know: Tours are available. You must book in advance online.

Berwick-Upon-Tweed

Visit England’s most northerly town. Just 2 and a half miles (4km) south of the Scottish border and sitting in the middle of Newcastle and Edinburgh, its history has helped shape its identity.

Elizabethan Walls

Built in 1558, the walls still stand to this day. They were originally built to keep out the Scots who would come and raid the town. You can now walk the 1 and a quarter mile route in around 45 minutes.

Spittal Beach

A popular trip for those visiting Berwick is across the River Tweed to Spittal Beach. The 2 mile walk, which is regularly served by buses, is a family-well kept beach with amusements, play parks for children and cafes.

Edinburgh

Scotland’s capital is a place of incredible architecture, natural beauty and rich history. Walk the streets and enjoy the special atmosphere you get from Edinburgh.
